On 2 February 2006, Fr. General Kolvenbach informed the members of the Society of Jesus that, with the consent of Pope Benedict XVI, he intended to step down in 2008, the year he would turn 80. Kolvenbach was only the second to resign the office which is usually held for life. Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach was elected as 28th Jesuit General in September 1983 by delegates of GC33. The election of Kolvenbach however, did not seem to solve the underlying areas of contention that some believed to be a Jesuit war against the papacy.
