Ignatian is an adjective derived from St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. It is frequently used to describe the spirituality that derives from St. Ignatius and particularly from the Spiritual Exercises. Father George Traub, S.J., in a booklet titled You Speak Ignatian? notes that 'Ignatian' is "often used now in distinction to Jesuit indicating aspects of spirituality that derive from Ignatius the lay person rather than from the later Ignatius and his religious order, the Society of Jesus, the former being more appropriate for and adaptable to lay people today."
