A large ocean-going submarine pattern with the properties of an attack submarine and added minelaying capabilities. U 71 and U 72 were built at the Vulcan shipyard in Hamburg, while U 73 and U 74 were constructed at the Kaiserliche Werft shipyard in Danzig.
