Nintendo R&D1 started development to make a sequel to Donkey Kong Jr. Math, but it was shelved and replaced it with a game based on the PBS show Mister Rogers Neighborhood. In 1986, Brøderbound purchased the publishing rights to the game from the Japanese company Nintendo.
