The 1953-20 was a Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event held at Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds on July 4, 1953. Lee Petty was the winner, holding off polesitter Buck Baker in 2nd and eventual sesaon champion Herb Thomas in 3rd. However, the more dramatic moment occured earlier in the morning. While taking a nap, championship contender Tim Flock is run over by a car on its qualifying run. Miraculously, Flock survives but is out of action for a while. Stats
