On December 2 1950 Mao Zedong proclaimed Chinese Peoples Democratic Republic. Forcing Chiang Kai-Chek to flee into exile in Formosa. The next five years became known as the years of terror. Mao arranged executions of anyone who didn't give their wholehearted support to the new regime, and issued death warrants for all former members of the Kuomintang, National army and Imperial army. Over three milliion were killed in 1951 alone and by 1955 Maos purges had resulted in the deaths of nearly 20 million. In 2004 Zemin was out manuvered by Hu Jintao who holds power to this day.
