Charles Wyler was an accomplice after the fact in the murder of Melanie Cavanagh, the woman whose thawing remains are the first trickle of intrigue in "A Chill Goes Through Her Veins". Wyler's best friend, Sam murdered his own wife, and then roped Charles in to help with disposal of the body. Charles claims that his main motivation was to protect Simone and Bela from the fallout if it became known that their father killed their mother.
