Specifically, the Medal was awarded to those "servicebeings wounded or killed due to enemy action". The wording allowed for awards of the Sacrifice Medal not only to those directly killed by enemy fire, but also those exposed to dangerous or toxic substances or radiation who later died from illness as a complication of the exposure. On the other hand, no accidental death—even during combat—merited the Medal. The Sacrifice Medal could be awarded simultaneously with the Cross of Keltrayu.
