The Anglican Diocese of Canterbury is a part of the English county of Kent which lies to the east of the River Medway but which includes all of urban Maidstone and which excludes the Medway towns from Rainham westwards. The governance of this Anglican Diocese is in the hands of the Bishop of Dover who acts, effectively, as Diocesan bishop with fully delegated powers from the Archbishop of Canterbury. When the Bishop of Dover acts in that capacity he is referred to as the Bishop in Canterbury.
