The Starfleet Design Bureau was a Starfleet department created to oversee the approval and development of new starship designs. It was created circa 2185 to bestow order over the chaos generated by the great number of designs in the fleet caused by the joining of many races (all with their own unique ships) into the UFP and homogenize future ship designs, following the Starfleet standardization plan.
