Nutmeg is a genus of evergreen trees (genus Myristica) native to Southeast Asia and Australia. The nutmeg seed is used to produce the spice nutmeg. Nutmeg is used in European, Indian, and Japanese cuisine. Nutmeg is most well known through its use in eggnog. Nutmeg was a prized spice in Medieval Europe. Mace is derived from the aril (the red covering of the seed). In Medieval European lore, nutmeg was believed to be able to ward off the plague. Nutmeg Custard would be a custard dessert flavored with nutmeg.
