On February 2, a tropical depression formed in the South China Sea. It slowly strengthened and reached tropical storm strength nearly 4 days later and was named Kujira. At the same time, another tropical depression formed 200 miles to the northwest. Both cyclones interacted and Kujira was absorbed by the tropical depression, 02W on February 9.
