The man who called himself Rip Van Winkle was actually a huge (7 foot) and extremely strong old lunatic who had escaped from a local asylum. He believed that he really was the Rip Van Winkle of legend, and was quick to fly into a murderous rage. His sense of logic was completely warped. He lived in a cabin in the Catskill Mountains.
