Kolazhi was one of the main components of Kolcta. It was the Vratix Seeqov Thranx who learned how to splice the DNA into the alazhi plant. Numerous kolazhi fields grew on Thyferra before the Empire took over the planet. The Human spy known as the Bloodletter supervised the harvesting of one field, making off with several tons of kolcta while the rest of the fields suffered a mysterious blight. A few hidden fields survived eradication on the planet, and new kolcta was produced in small lots up to the end of the Galactic Civil War.
