He is the warden of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He is friends with Paul Edgecomb and agrees, that Percy should be away of the Penitentiary, but cannot do anything, because of his influence. His wife is sick. She is going to die because of cancer and cannot do anything about it. He protects Paul and the others regarding the events about Willie and Percy in gratitude for their help.
