"Speedy" Morelock began racing in the Southeastern United States in the 1930's. In 1939, he earned the Points Title "AAA Big Car Southeastern States Championship". In the 1940's, he won many featured races. He retired from racing in 1951.. In 1965, he oversaw and influenced the building of the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia. The inaugural race there was on May 10, 1966, and was called the 1966 Speedy Morelock 200. A close friend and rival on the track, Charles Tidwell attended the first race there with his wife, LaTrelle Tidwell and his two year old daughter, Angela.
