Mercurians were featured in the Brazilian magazine Superinteressante in June 1999, in an article about what kinds of lifeforms could possibly be found on each planet of the solar system (except for Earth - obviously). Mercury wasn't the only world speculated to be inhabited by only simple organisms. In fact, only Venus and Mars were given complex creatures.
