Around thirty days after Emergence Day, Zhang was part of the effort to defend the city of Halvo Bay from a huge Locust assault. Zhang was stationed at the fortress of Onyx Point on an island near the city. When the Locust attacked the island, the Coalition of Ordered Governments forces became overwhelmed. Zhang ordered a retreat back to the central portions of the base, but was killed by Locust troops during the fallback. Zhang's COG Tag was later recovered by Pvt. Augustus Cole of Kilo Squad.
