The Axle (True-Tongue: Dura), also known (somewhat incorrectly) as the False Sky, is the space between the two World-Wheels: this Earth and that Earth. The Shadow told Landeles that humankind, fogmen, longmen, and the countless sentient beings on the Axle were lynchpins, holding together the Axle, and the World-Wheels. Without the lynchpins, the Axle would fade away, and this Earth, and that Earth with it, their chains coming apart in gigantic piles of nothing. Without the Axle, this Earth, and that Earth would fall apart, the lynchpins with them. Without the World-Wheels, the lynchpins would fade away with the Axle. And all of them without the Wheelright (i.e. the Shadow, the Shine, Landeles, 10th, etc.) would fall apart.
