Volo was a Gand who served as cartographer for the first expedition to Zurek. Although he did map enough of the planet for his part of the expedition to be considered a success, he sustained a lot of physical punishment, including the loss of an arm during the course of the expedition. Later, while he was still in the process of regenerating the arm (and therefore in a weakened state), a pack of Weasel lizards attacked and killed him. His body was presumably eaten since it was never found.
