Sir John Paul is the lord of Serpent's Hold during the time of Ultima VII. The Avatar met him at the entrance of Serpent's Hold, where he inspected a vandalized statue of Lord British. The lord recognised the Avatar at once and asked for assistance in the investigation of the crime. He advised to speak with Denton, since he was the most observant knight.
