Hewstone is a Mountain Man living in the Abyss. The Avatar found him in Ultima Underworld I in the tunnels of the mines of the second level of the Abyss. Hewstone told the Avatar how he'd barely escaped the attacks of the Gazer that was floating through the mine. Hewstone told the Avatar how to reach it, wishing the hero good luck on this difficult and dangerous mission. Hewstone also spoke about his job as a miner and how he admired gold. During that he let slip that a Rock Hammer could reduce boulders to small rocks. Later, like the others, he was rescued by Garamon, when the volcano erupted.
