The President of the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics (Russian: Президент СССР, Prezidyent SSSR) is the head of state of the Soviet Union. The office was formed on March 15, 1990, prior to which, the head of state of the Soviet Union was the Chairman of the Communist Party. The President is elected for a five year term, which is only renewable once, consecutively.
