He played junior hockey in Edmonton and then turned pro in the Pacific Coast Hockey League from 1928 to 1930. The Boston Bruins signed him as a free agent in 1930. Runge split two seasons between the Bruins and the Boston Cubs and then played for the Philadelphia Arrows in 1932-33. In 1933-34 he played in 4 games for the Montreal Maroons and in 1934-35 3 games for the Montreal Canadiens. Runge played three seasons of minor pro before retiring in 1942. He came back to play senior hockey in 1943-44 with the Edmonton Vics, a team hurriedly put together to give Alberta an Allan Cup qualifier.
