The CSS Fort Sumter was a cruiser launched by the Confederate States during the Great War in 1915. President Woodrow Wilson personally traveled to Charleston to christen the ship on its launch, smashing a champagne bottle against her bow. Wilson, a temperance man, informed the crowd that there was no champagne in the bottle, just soda water. Anne Colleton, who was present for the christening, found this an unnecessary overturning of tradition.
