In 1983, a recession called the Video Game Crash of 1983 occurred, which affected Sega, Nintendo and Atari. Atari ended up going bankrupt. Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega released the Master System. These two consoles sold 61 million and 10 million units, making them very successful.
