The highway starts in Dawson Creek, where it cuts off from Highway 49, from which it heads southeast along the Great Plains through Pouce Coupe and Tomslake to a junction with Highway 52 near Tupper. From here, it travels east just 3km to the British Columbia-Alberta border.
