Uka was the mate of Grod, who served as second-in-command to Brun. At the beginning of The Clan of the Cave Bear, Uka had two unmated, adult children: an unnamed son and Ovra, her daughter. During the first earthquake that left the clan homeless, Uka's son was killed, and Uka was inconsolable.
