The orginal name of WPI was the Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science. In 1886 after discussion of changing the name to Worcester Technical Institute, a name that was used informally for several years, the Trustees petitioned, and the name was changed on July 1, 1886, to The Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Shortly after the name change, the need for a seal was identified.
