The former transport ship Wachtfels, built at the Flensburger Schiffbaugesellschaft shipyard in 1913, was commissioned as an auxiliary cruiser by the German Navy in May 1916. For the first time, a merchant raider carried a floatplane, a Friedrichshafen FF 33E called Wölfchen (little wolf), to extend its reconnaissance radius.
