"Lieutenant, JG" or "Lieutenant, Junior Grade" is the second lowest commissioned officer rank in Starfleet. "Jay Gee's" as they are known are senior to Ensigns, but junior to Lieutenants. The rank of Lieutenant, JG is granted to Ensigns who have established themselves as officers deserving of more responsibility. Promotion to Lieutenant, JG is often granted by the Officer's Commanding Officer.
