Former Grandfather the Guy was The Kid's grandfather, who passed down the Cape of Heroes and the Very Small Gun to his grandson. As his name implies, Grandfather the Guy was once the Guy, however he was killed by The Father so he may become the next Guy. His murder by The Father appears to be a major driving force for the Kid to succeed him.
