A hydraulic probe was a probe used for terraforming. At the Velara Base, Arthur Malencon was responsible for the hydraulic probes. When the USS Enterprise-D visited the terraformers, the probes were offline and had to be repaired. Malencon went into the hydraulic chamber and was killed by what first looked like a malfunction.
