As with many records of the war, Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin's detailed history is not known. What is known is that circa FY 1090, a noblewoman named Esmara Getare overran and conquered much of what is now Illian and the Plains of Maredo before launching an assault on Andor. This assault was defeated and Getare was taken prisoner by Queen Telaisien. According to records, Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin was considered a "fair and just" ruler, noted for his wisdom in creating the bodies known as the Council of Nine and the Assemblage to help him rule over the kingdom.
