Most characters in Hajime no Ippo are ranked in the WBC because the oriental boxing federation is affiliated with the WBC. The only two notable champions not of the WBC are Ricardo Martinez (WBA featherweight champ) and Volg Zangief (IBF junior lightweight champ). It is said that there is currently fierce competition for the WBC featherweight belt because many are afraid to confront Martinez.
