A city state is an independent entity whose territory consists of a single city and often the surrounding lands. Historically such entities have shown themselves to be well unified as the population shares common cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. Thus they can be more easily managed then larger and often more diverse states. The most famous city states are the Greek and Italian states who often formed short lived yet effective alliances with each other in addition to partaking in various internal conflicts.
