While being imprisoned into the Hatch , Ben stated that Jacob (the "man in charge"} was a "great" and "brilliant man" , but not a "forgiving man" . He was afraid what he would do to him if he would fail , but this may have been just an interpretation of Benjamin , as he never actually met Jacob , and just wanted to earn Locke's sympathy .
