Some time after their daughter was born, Melinda had an affair with the warlock Matthew Tate, who betrayed her and exposed her as a Witch. Melinda was burned at the stake and her daughter was raised by mortal neighbors. It is unknown what became of William, or why he was unable to care for his daughter.
