On January 1, 2004, the British Columbia Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) came into effect. PIPA regulates the way private sector organizations collect, use, secure and disclose personal information. PIPA ensures that organizations holding personal information handle that information responsibly. It also gives individuals control over the way their information is handled, gives individuals the right to request access to their information and to request the correction of their personal information.
