P.C. Hedley and a female colleague arrived at the Corner Shop flat after being informed by Emily Bishop that a man, John Lane, had been stalking Gail Potter with phone calls and had posed as a GPO engineer to get into her flat. Lane had locked the flat door but a terrified Gail unlocked it to let in Hedley and her flatmate Tricia Hopkins, who had been out on a date with Philip Harper for the evening and had no idea anything was amiss until she met the police on the doorstep. Although he hadn't harmed Gail, Lane could expect criminal charges for making the phone calls.
