It has been in debate for a long time. Tetsuya Nomura has said that a remake is not being planned at the moment. However, he has also stated that if a remake would be made, all the members of the orignal staff (programers, producers, game designers, etc.) would be assembled once more. As of how, however, everyone that WAS on the original team are scattered around working on many upcoming projects such as Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdom Hearts, etc. The bright side is that the remake idea has not thrown out altogether; it is merely being postponed for the moment.
