Truscott joined the United States army in 1917 and only two years later, he married Sarah Nicholas Randolph. Truscott was then selected for officer training and was became a second lieutenant of cavalry. He also served as an instructor and carried out several cavalry assignments in the interwar period between WWI and WWII.
