Lightning serves as the main protagonist of the 012 storyline as she leads the other five new heroes in their battle with the manikins, and to keep in with her role as the leader of the new heroes, her main rival is Garland, the leader of Chaos's armies. This rivalry is featured in the game's opening FMV.
