Also known as District 9 Fire Department, the Lake Echo Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1972. A second was built in North Preston a few years later. In 1996, it and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
