The archipelago of the Chatham Islands is a territory of the ANZC in the Pacific Ocean consisting of about ten islands within a 40 km (25 mi) radius, the largest of which are Chatham Island and Pitt Island. These remote islands, over 800 km (500 mi) east of southern New Zealand, were officially part of New Zealand from 1842 to 1996. In 1996 they became a dependency of the ANZC.
