Spiders are corporate hackers. Low end facilities will usually have an offsite spider who connects to the facility through the Matrix and are only called in if there is clearly a threat that IC can not handle. Higher end facilities will have their own dedicated spider or a team of spiders constantly patrolling the network searching for intruders or scanning for network vulnerabilities.
