He played for the University of Michigan from 1973 to 1977, making the all-star team in 1977. Undrafted by any NHL team, he was signed as a Free agent by the Cleveland Barons in 1977. Manery enjoyed a very good rookie season with the Barons, scoring 22 goals and 27 assists in 1977-78. The Barons then folded, and Manery found himself with the Minnesota North Stars. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in January, 1980, and to the Winnipeg Jets that February. In 1981 he was sent down to the Tulsa Oilers. In 1981-82 Manery scored 54 goals for the Oilers.
