8mm (also called Video8) tapes are about the same size as an audio cassette. 8mm tapes were first used by Sony in 1984 on its Handycams. The benefits of 8mm tapes are that they are smaller than VHS tapes. They are generally available in 60 or 120 minute lengths. They were made obsolete by Hi8. 8mm tapes have about 240 lines of resolution, and use mono audio. 8mm video tape should not be confused with 8mm film or Super8 formats.
