The Army Medical Department of the U.S. Army — known as the AMEDD — comprises the Army's six medical Special Branches (or "Corps") of officers and its enlisted medical soldiers. It was established as the "Army Hospital" in July 1775 to coordinate the medical care required by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The AMEDD is led by the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, a Lieutenant general. The current Surgeon General of the U.S. Army is LTG Patricia Horoho. She is also commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM).
