The Wehrmacht paused to regroup outside Coucy-le-Château during their invasion of France. The plan was to attack suddenly with Panzers and without artillery preparation, so the French would not have any warning. The town proved too big and too strongly held by both French and British troops, so the attackers had to take it. It proved expensive but the Germans were hopeful that it would create the desired breakthough.
